In many cases, users need a Mac OS X Lion installer to start an older iMac that has already been erased. This has become increasingly difficult because Apple no longer offers Lion through the Mac App Store, and the .pkg files that occasionally appear cannot be converted into a usable full installer. In addition, some older Macs are unable to use Recovery Mode to reinstall the operating system.
You may also be looking to download Mac OS X Lion 10.7 for an older Mac that does not support later macOS versions. The good news is that this article provides direct options to download the Mac OS X Lion installer app, DMG file or ISO image.

Another option is to download the OS X Lion DMG (.dmg) file for bootable installation media. A DMG file is a disk image that contains the files required to install or upgrade to Mac OS X Lion. The official Mac OS X Lion DMG file is still hosted on Apple's servers. You can copy the download link and open it in Safari to begin downloading the file.
After the download is complete, you can extract the installer and proceed to the section below to learn how to create a bootable Lion USB on a Mac. If you are working from a Windows system, you can instead follow this guide: How to Create macOS Bootable USB from Windows 10/11.
